Earthquake Shakes Italy
Early this morning a 6.3 earthquake shook the town of L’aquila, Italy. The town is located 60 miles from Rome. So far the death toll stands at 150 people, and over 1,500 injuries. The quake hit at 3:30 AM local time, and lasted for about 30 seconds. The quake has left thousands homeless, and has had effects so bad that Italy’s prime minister canceled his trip to Russia, so that he could visit quake effected areas. Currently 4,000 rescue workers are searching through rubble to find survivors, but getting into areas with severe earthquake damage is difficult. The town’s buildings are built close to the road, making it almost impossible for rescue vehicles to get to people who need help. The earthquake is said to have caused severe damage to historic structures. A 6.5-magnitude quake in southern Italy in 1980 killed nearly 3,000 people.
