More than 4 out of 5 Americans give Congress negative ratings

NEW YORK (BNO NEWS) – An overwhelming majority of Americans (86%), more than four out of five, give the overall job Congress is doing a negative rating, according to a Harris Poll released on Monday.

The poll shows that Republicans and Democrats have finally both agreed on something: giving Congress negative ratings, that is. Almost all Republicans (97%) give Congress negative marks, as do nine in ten Independents (90%). And despite Democratic control of Congress, three-quarters of Democrats (75%) give the institution negative ratings.

The Tea Party continues to have its stable support with just under two in five Americans (37%) supporting the Tea Party Movement and three in ten (31%) opposing it. Although most of this support is coming from Republicans, as almost three in every four express their support, Independents also uphold the movement with 43 percent, while more than half of Democrats (56%) oppose it.

And while over one-third of Americans may be supporters of the Tea Party movement, this does not mean they all consider themselves members of the Party. Only eight percent of them would actually describe themselves as a member of the Tea Party while 77 percent would not.

November's election for Congress will seemingly be close, as the poll shows that just over one-third (34%) of U.S. adults would vote for a Democratic candidate while three in ten (30%) would vote for a Republican candidate. But if a Tea Party candidate enters the race, Democrats might benefit as votes for Republicans, according to the survey, would be divided into 18 percent and 14 percent, for a Republican and Tea Party candidate, respectively.

With only four months until the elections begin, each party will have much work ahead to clearly convince Americans that they are ideal for Congress.

The Harris Poll surveyed 2,227 adults between June 14 and June 21 for the results of the poll.
