Two Mexican journalists rescued by federal police
MEXICO CITY (BNO NEWS) -- Mexican police on Saturday rescued two journalists that were kidnapped by a drug cartel earlier in the week, officials said.
During a press conference, Genaro Garcia Luna, minister of Public Security, said Alejandro Hernandez, a cameraman for Televisa, and Javier Canales, another cameraman for Milenio Television, were rescued after a raid in Gomez Palacio, a city in the northern Durango state. Upon noticing that federal police arrived, the kidnappers fled.
Luna said the two cameramen along with Hector Gordoa, a reporter with Televisa, were abducted by the powerful Sinaloa cartel. Gordoa was released by his captors on Thursday.
The captors demanded Televisa and Milenio to air three videos in which a local police officer described ties between the rival Zetas cartel and local officials. "I want to thank God I'm alive, that's all I can tell, was a bitter experience," said Fernandez.
According to Luna, the operation was carried out after the kidnappers failed to comply with the negotiations.
