NEW YORK CITY (BNO NEWS) – The New York City Health Department on Friday confirmed two more human cases of West Nile viral disease, causing the New York Health Department to strongly urge New Yorkers to take steps to prevent an infection.

Three individuals this year in New York City have been tested positive for West Nile virus, one 61-year-old man from the Bronx and a 74-year-old woman and a 46-year-old woman from Staten Island, New York. West Nile virus cases typically appear during this time of year, with growing populations of mosquitoes.

"This first case of West Nile viral disease in New York City provides a vital reminder to protect ourselves against mosquito bites," said New York City Health Commissioner Dr. Thomas Farley. "Wearing mosquito repellent when you are outdoors, and long sleeves and pants in the morning and evening will reduce your risk of infection. New Yorkers age 50 and older should be especially careful as they are more likely to become seriously ill, and in rare instances die, if infected."

The West Nile virus became prominent in the U.S. in 1999, when it was first discovered in the country. So far, 199 cases of West Nile virus have been established in New Yorkers, including three cases in 2009 and 15 in 2008.

The New York Health Department is urging reduced exposure to mosquitoes, noting that New Yorkers should use approved insect repellent containing DEET, picaridin, lemon eucalyptus oils, or products that contain the active ingredient IR3535. It also suggested that all windows have proper screens, the elimination of any standing water, clean roof gutters, and clean and chlorinated pools and hot tubs.

The West Nile virus causes mild or moderate flu-like symptoms, but sometimes doesn’t establish symptoms at all. However, in some, specifically those 50 years or older, can cause serious and potentially fatal infection of the brain and spinal cord.

The New York Health Department urges anyone who thinks they have the virus to visit their doctor immediately.
