Spanaway, WA child molester sentenced to over 22 years in prison
TACOMA, WASHINGTON (BNO NEWS) – A Spanaway, Washington child molester on Friday was sentenced to over 22 years in prison following his conviction on aggravated abuse of a minor, prosecutors said.
Jeffrey Richard Smiley, 37, also pleaded guilty to a separate case in Pierce County Superior Court to two counts of child molestation involving another young victim.
In July 2009, a 7-year-old girl told her mother and law enforcement that Smiley molested her while driving her home from a gathering, and later when babysitting at her home. The defendant allegedly threatened the girl with leaving her in the woods where he had molested her.
Later that month, investigators with the U.S. Army Criminal Investigative Division (CID) found discovered camera equipment, toys, children's clothes, homemade dolls, mattresses and personal lubricants at two locations of the woods which are part of the Fort Lewis Military Reservation.
At one of the woods' locations, investigators located Smiley's car and searched it. Law agents found photographs that included child pornography. Inside the car, computer equipment with images of child pornography were discovered. The young victim was depicted in some of the photos seized.
Since 2006, Smiley was investigated three times for child molestation involving young females. Charges in one case were pending when he was arrested on the federal charge. After pleading guilty, he will serve the state sentence concurrent with his lengthy federal sentence.
Overall, Smiley was sentenced to 266 months in prison and a lifetime of supervised release.
"Smiley is an untreated sexual predator who is sexually obsessed with minor females. Smiley presents an extreme danger to society. If he remains untreated, he will victimize another minor female. Therefore, in order to adequately protect the public a long prison sentence is needed and warranted," Assistant U.S. Attorney Bruce Miyake said.
