Three babies found dead in southern Netherlands

GELEEN, NETHERLANDS (BNO NEWS) -- The bodies of three infants have been found in the southern Netherlands city of Geleen, local media reported on Wednesday evening.

One of the bodies was found Friday in a shed in the southern Dutch city of Geleen, in Limburg province. A 41-year-old was arrested the same day and, according to prosecutors, is believed to have killed the baby after giving birth to the infant.

But as investigators investigated the scene over the weekend, the bodies of two more infants were discovered, local radio and television station L1 reported on its website on Wednesday. It is unclear how long the babies were kept inside the shed, or how they were killed.

The case comes just weeks after a 25-year-old Dutch woman was arrested in the northern province of Friesland on suspicion of murdering her four newborns. The woman allegedly kept the babies in suitcases, in the attic of her home.

The investigation into the young mother began earlier this year after someone came forward to police and reported that the woman may have had several pregnancies. "The question was what could have happened to those children," said Annette Bronsvoort, a local prosecutor, on August 6.

Bronsvoort said police decided to continue their investigation at a 'right time' after more information became available, but did not say how long it took to resume the investigation. The suspect was interrogated several times and gave various statements about what had happened to her children, including a story in which she said she gave the children away for adoption.

"She was asked to prove this which she couldn't," Bronsvoort said. "Eventually a moment came where she said, those babies are not alive anymore [and] they are probably in the attic."

Bronsvoort on August 6 said this statement was reason to immediately conduct a search of her home. "That happened yesterday and, in the attic of the home of the suspect, goods were seized including suitcases which have been taken to the Dutch Forensic Institute."

Forensic investigation by the Dutch Forensic Institute revealed that all four suitcases which were seized from the home each contained a body.

Bronsvoort said the parents of the suspect were unaware of their daughter's pregnancies, despite the fact that their daughter lived with them. It also remains unknown who the father, or fathers, of the babies are. Some residents in the village, according to national broadcaster RTL News, described her as the "most beautiful girl of the village."

The Dutch cases follow a similar case in France in late July, where a woman from Villers-au-Tertre was arrested on suspicion of suffocating her eight babies. She said her family with two daughters was complete and refused to take birth control. Her husband was not aware of her eight pregnancies.

But similar cases have happened regularly in the Netherlands over the past several years. A 19-year-old woman from Breda, a city near Tilburg in the southern Netherlands, was arrested in July after the remains of a baby were found inside a suitcase in her home's attic. The remains had been there for approximately 10 months.

And in December 2008, a 23-year-old woman was arrested after a dead baby was found in the Dutch city of Enschede. She later revealed the location of a bag that contained the remains of a second baby.

And in January 2006, Etta A. from Beverwijk near Amsterdam was arrested after she killed her four newborns by drowning them. She was later sentenced to three years in jail and involuntary psychiatric treatment.

I have never been blessed with children and am in shock at this trend of disregard for humanity.
